The Figure
Water still and dark and cold
As sun dips low our story told
Something stirs from deep within
Instinct warns as night is born
The calmness as the crickets chirp
And birds settle for night
All is still, and all looks right
But something lurks just out of sight
There is a spectre in the dark
A figure from still water rises
The fear crawls up the neck
Heart beats as the world stills
Not a word, not a sound
Nothing but blackness found
A shadow on the water in the dim grey light
A figure rising, beckons night
Dare not yell, dare not scream
No sound or action from body comes
Limbs frozen, eyes locked, heartbeats from
The dim dark figure in the evening light
And just as soon come now gone
Eyes still locked left looking on
Left to wonder, left to fear
That what you’d seen could still be near
That figure, still and dark in the evening light
As sun sets, gives way to night
